Pfizer was founded in 1949 in Brooklyn by two german cousins, Charles Pfizer and Charles Erhart. Their first product was santonin, an antiparasitic that they sold in the form of candy.
The next endeavor was citric acid. Widely used in soft drinks such as Coca-Cola, it made Pfizer even more successful and let the company grow.
Charles Erhart died in 1981, leaving the business venture in the hands of Charles Pfizer. Pfizer died in 1906 when their company was making $3 million per year.
By 1936, Pfizer was a leading manufacturer of vitamin C. However, it was not the only top seller: the other was the life-saving antibiotic penicillin. In 1941 with WW2 underway, penicillin was vital for the allied war effort, and Pfizer was the only company to implement the fermenting process successfully. They took a risk and invested millions of dollars in perfecting the process and buying equipment. In 1944, when Allies stormed the beaches of Normandy, Pfizer was supplying the majority of penicillin.
In 1950 the company went international. In 1989, company scientists created Viagra. It took nine years to start selling the pill. In 1991, Pfizer began to market Zoloft, an antidepressant of their own making, that would in 2016 become the most commonly prescribed psychiatric medication in the United States.
2004 saw Pfizer included in Dow Jones Industrial Average. In 2020, it made headlines when the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was created. Pfizer’s turnover for the third quarter of 2021 was $24,094 million.
